GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR DINNER NAPKINS
Etiquette says that napkins should always be placed to the left of the plate setting, period. But I’ll tell you a secret: it’s good to know how to break the rules sometimes! As long as the rule is broken intentionally, there is room for creativity—something to set your tablescape apart and really impress your guests.
One way to break this rule is to present a folded napkin to enhance your setting’s design. With just a few folds and rolls of the cloth, your napkin transforms into a delicate rose, complete with “leaves” and layers of soft “petals.” In this case, rule-breaking will pay off, resulting in an elegant and eye-catching piece of art!
Here are some other ideas of how you can break formal napkin etiquette and try something new:
- Tie your napkin into a bow or cinch the middle of the napkin with a ribbon or ring to create a bow-like shape.
- Fold your napkins to form a pocket. Tuck your silverware inside and rest the place card on top.
- For holidays, fold your napkins into fun, lighthearted shapes, like a Christmas tree, Easter bunny ears, or a four-leaf clover. There are so many tutorials online!
Once more, as long as you are intentionally breaking the rules and creating something unique, there is no reason to feel that you have to follow every detail of etiquette at every party you plan. After all, some rules are meant to be broken!
