HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT GUEST ROOM
Designing a guest room is all about the details of the experience. When you design the room, you’ll want to consider the following: What would make your guest feel comfortable and welcomed? What would make the stay feel seamless for them? Here are some tips you can follow to make sure that your guests have a 5-star hotel experience.
Comfort is Key
Sleep is so important, especially for friends and family who are spending a night away from home and may be tired from travel! For this reason, you must consider how to create spaces of comfort throughout the guest room. Purchase a comfortable, high-quality mattress and plush mattress topper to create the foundation for a good night’s sleep. Choose hotel-quality bedding and always include additional pillows and linens in case your guests feel cold or like to sleep with a bit more support. Adding small touches like the soft green throw or decorative pillows in my video help to create that luxury hotel feeling.
If the size of your room allows, consider additional ways you can create moments of reprieve. In my guest room, I have a comfortable, oversized chair where guests can sit to read or meditate. You can always drape blankets or place small pillows on your chair as well. Finally, make sure that your guests feel that they have complete privacy. I hang high-quality, black-out curtains so that my guests aren’t disturbed by light or movement outside unless they want to throw them back and let the sunshine in!
Make Space and Add Special Details
Clear out any personal items or clutter from drawers, shelves, and cabinets so that your guests feel that the space is their own. I keep my decor clean and minimal. As you see in the video, I incorporate just a few items like a small floral arrangement and a few interesting reads on fashion design. Nothing makes a guest feel more unwelcomed than walking into a space that doesn’t allow for them to unpack and move around!
Creating a clutter-free space will free up small areas where you can place those special details that are synonymous with a great hotel stay. I always like to leave a bottle of distilled water, a coaster, and a glass by the bedside. On the bed, I often leave a tray of delicious chocolates. These items are standard for any of my guests but if I know the person well, I’ll always try to include treats and snacks that I know they will love to have. As I said, it’s all in the details!
Turn Inconvenience into Convenience
Leaving your home means changing your established daily routine—and that is rarely convenient! But what if your guest room was designed to relieve some of that inconvenience by providing the necessities for your guests? Here are a few items that I always include in my guest room:
- Digital clock
- Wifi network and password, clearly displayed in the room so they do not need to ask (the examples in my video are just for show! Stay over as my guest and you’ll have the real ones!)
- Keys to my home, if the stay is longer than just a night
- Tissues and other bathroom essentials. Who hasn’t forgotten to bring something like a toothbrush or toothpaste? I always keep a basket of essentials displayed in the corner of the guest’s bathroom vanity or on the dresser.
These items will completely transform your guest’s experience, providing convenience in the morning, night, and throughout the day. By considering the convenience of your guest space along with ensuring that your guests feel comfortable and welcomed, you are sure to have a constant rotation of friends and family in your home as your guests will always be looking for the next opportunity to visit.
